» Council raises garbage rates

Bandon residents are now paying more to have their garbage hauled away.

The Bandon City Council approved a 3.3 percent increase at a recent meeting for Bandon Disposal and Recycling, the city’s garbage franchise.

What that means to most customers is an additional 50 cents per month for a 35-gallon can to be emptied via the curbside service Bandon Disposal provides, for a total of $15.79. Customers who use 40-gallon cans are paying 59 cents more per month, a total of $18.59.

The company also offers curbside recycling for an additional $4.11 per month.

The last solid waste collection and disposal rate adjustment, that went into effect in January 2009, hiked rates 2.78 percent.

Bandon Disposal pays the city a franchise fee of 5 percent of gross revenues from city collections, according to City Manager Matt Winkel. The current 2009-10 budget includes $33,000 in garbage franchise revenues, which are deposited into the Community Beautification Fund and used primarily for maintenance of landscaping on city properties and tree trimming. Bandon Disposal also operates the recycling center, provides free pickup and disposal for all of the city’s Dumpsters and provides free brush pickup programs three times a year — in mid-January, the first week in May and the last week in October.

The percent of increase was based on the Consumer Price Index for the Portland-Salem area, which is calculated by the U.S. Department of Labor and the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

A 2009 Oregon Collection rate survey shows the amount customers in other cities and counties throughout the state pay monthly for a 32-to 35-gallon can per month. Coos Bay/North Bend residents pay $18.35 with recycling included; Coos County residents pay $17.26, and curbside recycling is not offered; Port Orford residents pay $19.65, including recycling; Gold Beach residents pay $19.99, including recycling; and Powers residents pay $19.60, which doesn’t include recycling.

Totally confused...wrote on Feb 9, 2010 10:02 PM:

Seriously? Someone is actually going to compliment the "service" provided by Bandon Disposal?

I suppose it could be worse... They could scatter more garbage around the City as they half-heartedly go about their task of "collecting" refuse!

The lack of competition, coupled with their quasi-municpal status, makes this another horrible City of Bandon entity.

Raise the rates so Winkel can blow another $40k on a sign lacking class and creativity. Pathetic!

Bandon Disposal more than deserves the increased rates. Their service is consistently excellent. Their employees are very couteous and helpful and they have never missed a pickup, even when mechanical problems forced them to manually lift the trash cans. In my opinion, they exceed expectations. even in the most harsh weather conditions.
