Bandon High School junior Jennifer Miles has always wanted to travel the world. This September, her first journey will begin when she leaves her hometown to become an exchange student in Italy until June 2010.
Jennifer has been busily fundraising to pay for the expenses associated with being an exchange student. She is still short of her goal, however.
This Saturday, Jennifer, along with her family, will be selling patriotic items at the City Park during the Lions Family Fun day, and also selling items in Old Town. She also plans a garage sale and a car wash and bottle drive sometime this summer.
Jennifer, an honor roll student, is excited about being in the student exchange program. She was scheduled to go to Great Britain, but had to change her choice at the last minute. Now she is learning about Italy.
“I chose Italy because of the history and beauty of the country,” Jennifer said. “Going into picking a new country, I didn’t know anything about Italy so I have been doing a lot of research on it, and now I love it.”
“I think being a foreign exchange student will benefit my chances of getting into a good college and I am also hoping to be a foreign correspondent journalist and early travel will hopefully help with that,” Jennifer added. “I plan on returning to BHS my senior year to graduate and after high school I plan to go to a university and major in journalism.”
Anyone wishing to donate can mail donations in care of Jennifer to 675 12th Court, Bandon, OR, 97411. For more information, call Sandy Miles at 347-2730 or e-mail to
