Birds program at picnic shelter

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and Free Flight Bird and Marine Mammal Rehabilitation will present a program on seabirds and shorebirds at the Port of Bandon’s boardwalk picnic shelter from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, June 26.

Presenters will include Jess Gelnett of the USFWS, and Pam Wright, Free Flight’s program director.

People of all ages are invited to learn about the birds and the nearby Oregon Islands and Bandon Marsh National Wildlife Refuges. Children will be able to watch volunteers “morph” into seabirds and shorebirds while being amazed by the birds’ adaptions for survival and success, a spokeswoman said.

Fourth of July events The Bandon Lions Club’s community Fourth of July celebration begins with a parade and flyover at 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 4. Those interested in participating in the parade can call Jeff Norris at 290-5383. Line up will be in front of the high school gym on Ninth Street and the parade will travel down U.S. Highway 101 and through Old Town. Bandon Fire Chief Lanny Boston is this year’s grand marshal.

The Lions’ fourth-annual Family Fun Day in City Park will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Hamburger and Polish dog meals will be served. Drinks, ice cream and rootbeer floats also will be available. Live music provided by the band Hot Wax and activities for the children also are planned. Vendor booths are still available. All proceeds benefit Lions sight and hearing programs. Call Katy Morehead at 347-7126 for more information.

Bandon’s annual fireworks display will take place near the Coquille River at approximately 10 p.m. The fireworks are sponsored by the Bandon Chamber of Commerce. Donations can be made at the Visitor Center. For more information on the Lions Fourth of July events, call John Hubbard at 347-3573.

The Fourth of July weekend will include the Coos Kennel Club’s all-breed dog show on Saturday and Sunday on school grounds, the Quality Crafters Guild show and crafts sale Saturday at The Barn and the Golf Scramble fundraiser for the community garden Sunday at Old Bandon Golf Links.

Golf for Health tournament July 25

Sponsorship and player registrations for the second-annual Bandon Golf for Health Classic are under way. The event will be held Saturday, July 25, at Bandon Crossings Golf Course, off Highway 101 about 6 miles south of Bandon. The charity tournament is sponsored by Southern Coos Health Foundation to enhance community access to quality health care at Southern Coos Hospital & Health Center, according to a press release.

Player registration of $100 per person or $400 a team includes the Get Your Juices Flowing continental breakfast, golf cart, greens fee and the awards barbecue that follows the tournament. A preferred team of four people for $500 includes the above plus entry to the Sponsor’s Appreciation Party the night before, on Friday, July 24, at Old Bandon Golf Links, which will also include entry in the horserace golfing event.

OIMB Summer Series offered

The Oregon Institute of Marine Biology announces its Summer Seminar Series. All seminars will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesdays at the OIMB Boathouse auditorium, with the exception of the July 22 event, which will be held at 7 p.m. Those attending are asked to park on Boat Basin Road and walk down to the OIMB Boathouse.

South county Relay for Life July 10

The South Coos County Relay for Life will be held July 10-11 at the Coquille High School, 499 West Central St. The American Cancer Society fundraising event begins at 6 p.m. on Friday, July 10, and runs through 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11.
